Beauty

Beauty is so many things but never one thing. For me beauty doesn't have just one set of criteria and I also believe it is absolutely in the eyes of the beholder. This means that beauty for me and beauty for you could mean 2 totally different things. I don't ever believe either that I have to accept anyone else's definition of beauty because as Don Miguel Ruiz says, every body's ideas and thoughts are based on their own motives, dreams and intentions. The official definition of beauty in the dictionary says,

"a combination of qualities, such as

shape, colour, or form, that pleases

the aesthetic senses, especially the sight"

There are so many people, places and things I find beautiful. I find myself strange sometimes because, as a woman, there are some women who I find just captivating. It's not just their faces but most often their very form and their personalities. I just love beauty. I even find some people's minds beautiful, like my friend who is so open minded and non-judgmental and finds beauty in everything. She thinks gay love in its purest form is beautiful. I love her heart. There are people who I find just beautiful who others would give me the side eye about, like the musician Seal. I find him just beautiful and sexy. I love his colour, I love his facial expressions, I love his body and his accent is just too sexy. But then I also find Halle Berry to be stunning; her colour too, her face, her voice and her very feminine form, for me, define beauty. I believe that for me to declare someone beautiful they have to come across to me as genuine in their personality and character. That's why I find Kim Kardashian most beautiful when she is without makeup and coming across as vulnerable. I have a Greek friend who I think is beautiful. He's beautiful for many reasons but also because of how he looks at me. He looks into my eyes as if they somehow hold the meaning to life, there is no awkwardness or shyness in his steer - no reservation - that's so beautiful.

I find it beautiful when people are happy and expressing themselves. Laughter is beautiful, love is beautiful. Genuine friends sharing a moment and not caring who is watching or who might be judging them is beautiful. If you have ever been privileged enough to hear 2 lovers, ex-lovers, friends or sisters try to express how much love they feel for each other it could be overwhelming and make you even emotional - that's beautiful. People being genuinely open and unashamed about their feelings is beautiful.

I've seen some beautiful places around the world as well. I believe that one of the most beautiful places I've been to is Valladolid, Spain but then I visited Porto, Portugal and realised that it was also breathtakingly beautiful. The history, architecture and culture are somethings to experience. I do however believe that the gem of all places I have been to is Jamaica my home. I am most comfortable here, I know these people, the beaches are beautiful, the landscape is breathtaking and the characters that occupy this space can be found nowhere else on this planet. Our language is expressive and hilarious and English does it no justice at all. Our music and dance and culture are just captivating; the food is "obeah" because I can't resist it. Even in the myriad of problems we face on this little rock called Jamaica, there are so many beautiful things to see and experience - the very national anthem melts my heart and blinds me with beauty every time I sing it..........Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica Land we love.
